Court of Justice

Founded: 1907 (renamed from Provincial Court in 2024) Appointing Authority: Lieutenant Governor in Council (Alberta Cabinet) Judges: ~136 province-wide

Handles the vast majority of cases in Alberta — summary criminal offences, family law, civil claims under $100,000, youth justice, and traffic matters. Judges are recommended by a provincial judicial appointments committee and appointed by the Alberta Cabinet. No jury trials at this level. The court sits in communities across the province, making it the most accessible point of entry into the justice system for most Albertans.
